Yard calculator: seed, fertiliser, water and mulch

Results appear here.

Assumptions used

  • Grass seed: typically 35 g/m² for a new lawn, 17 g/m² for overseeding.
  • Fertiliser: a common guideline is 5 g of nitrogen per m² per feed. The calculator converts that using the nitrogen % you enter.
  • Water: typically 25 mm per week, which is 25 litres per m² per week, including rainfall.
  • Mulch: volume = area × depth. Always follow the product label for any fertiliser or treatment.

Compost calculator: browns to greens

Enter rough weights or volumes in the same unit for both. The ratio is a guide, not a laboratory measurement.

A common guideline is roughly 2–3 parts browns to 1 part greens by volume. See our compost guide for what counts as each.
